What and Where is My IMEI Number?

What and Where is My IMEI Number?

These days, smart devices are in everyone’s pocket, and we have all become fairly proficient when it comes to new technology and using smartphones.

However, some things can remain a mystery to users. One such thing is your phone’s IMEI number; what is it, and where can you find it?

What is an IMEI Number?

Essentially, an IMEI, or International Mobile Equipment Identity number, is a unique identification on your phone. It is usually 15-digits long and functions to differentiate your device from any other.

The standard format for an IMEI number is ‘AA-BBBBBB-CCCCCC-D’, with each section representing the following details.

  • A and B: Identify the manufacturer and device model.
  • C: Your device’s unique serial number.
  • D: The final digit is a check digit that ensures the IMEI number is recorded correctly and meets with the approved guidelines.

The IMEI number is not to be confused with the SIM number as it is completely separate and cannot be changed.

What Is The Purpose of an IMEI Number?

So why does it matter that you know what this number is and where to find it?

As an identification number, the IMEI can be useful if you ever need to contact the manufacturers or providers of your device. If you ever take your phone to be repaired, they will use this number to differentiate it from the millions of other individual devices.

If your phone is stolen or lost, the IMEI number can be used to single out your device and blacklist it from networks, essentially making it useless to anyone who tries to use it after it is no longer in your possession.

The IMEI can also come in handy when looking into buying a second-hand phone. As already mentioned, the number indicates which make and model is being sold. It can help you discern whether the phone is the one you are looking for.

You can also use this number to ascertain whether the phone you intend to buy comes from a reputable seller by checking whether that number has been reported lost, stolen or blacklisted.

Where Can You Find This Number?

Depending on the brand and model of your phone, the IMEI number can be found in various places.

For most phones, you will be able to find it on the back of your phone, under the battery, or on the phone’s original box. You can also access the number by going to your phone’s settings.

For most Apple devices, the IMEI can be found easily by going to ‘Settings’, then ‘General’ and finally, ‘About’. There is a wealth of information about your phone here, including the IMEI number.

For older iPhones, you will be able to find the number printed on the back cover of the phone and on the SIM card tray.

Samsung Phones IMEI Location

If you have recently bought, or are thinking about buying, a reconditioned Samsung phone, there are a number of ways you can access its IMEI number.

One of the easiest ways to find out this number on a Samsung Galaxy device is to dial *#06# on your phone. The relevant details will then automatically appear on the screen.

Like with Apple devices, you can also find the IMEI in the settings menu. Simply go to ‘Settings’ and then ‘About Phone’ or ‘About Device’. Here you will be able to clearly see all the appropriate details about your phone.

Some older devices will have the IMEI printed on the back of the phone or beneath the removable battery, along with other serial and model numbers.
