A Closer Look at the Oppo Find X2 Pro

A Closer Look at the Oppo Find X2 Pro

Here we are in 2020 and the term ‘flagship killer’ is sort of on the way out of fashion. Brands that had previously released ‘flagship killer’ phones such as Xiaomi, OnePlus and Realme are much less the killers of flagships and are now the flagships themselves.

Although the term typically denotes a phone that has equal or higher specs than the best device from the marketplace leaders, such as Apple or Samsung, these Chinese brands are now seen by many as level competitors, rather than underdogs.

However, amongst the craziness of the marketplace, with new releases left, right and centre, there is one that stands out from the others.

Introducing the Oppo Find X2 Pro

Announced in March and due for release in summer 2020 (subject to change), the Oppo Find X2 Pro is the big brother of the Find X2, which in itself offers an impressive roster of specs. However, at second-handphones.com, we’re always interested in the biggest and best, so we’ll be focussing specifically on the Find X2 Pro here.

Based on initial reports, the Oppo Find X2 Pro will have a UK price of £1,099, undercutting Samsung’s Galaxy S20 Ultra 512GB by £300 and Apple’s iPhone 11 Pro Max 512GB by £400. There is also the recently announced Huawei P40 Pro to consider, currently retailing at £899; however, with 8GB of RAM and 256GB internal memory, the specs aren’t quite at the standard of the Find X2 Pro.

What Do You Get From the Oppo Find X2 Pro?

Well, here’s the headlines. The Oppo Find X2 Pro comes in one storage model, offering 12GB of RAM and 512GB ROM (internal memory), it packs the latest Snapdragon 865 chipset and comes in two different colours; orange vegan leather or black ceramic.

These specs stack up well to the S20 Ultra which offers both a 128GB and 512GB model but does also offer 16GB RAM for its highest tier device. When comparing Geekbench scores, Oppo ranks just below the iPhone 11 Pro Max and slightly higher than the S20 Ultra, not bad really!

Design and Appearance

The display measures 6.7” and has a small hole-punch style camera in the top left of the screen. Although some may prefer the front-facing shooter in the middle, this position on the screen works well when using the phone horizontally for video content. That being said, games that require joy-stick controls might cause some problems, as you may need to use that particular area of the screen for controlling the game.

Speaking of the screen, the 120hz display refresh rate has made its way into this device, providing a smooth user experience as you glide through the menus.

The display offers a 1440 x 3168-pixel resolution which translates to a 513 ppi pixel density. Protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 6, the phone is also IP68-rated so it’s dust and water-resistant, as we’d expect from any flagship device in 2020. The orange vegan leather is a striking colour and will appeal to some people more than others. For those that don’t like this colour option, the black style looks suitably swish.

Internal Specs

The handset packs a genuine punch when it comes to the performance of the device, stocking the Snapdragon 865 chipset while running Android 10.0. The 12GB of RAM is plenty for carrying out everyday tasks and tackles online games breezily, something where budget and even mid-range phones have a tendency to struggle.

The 512GB of internal storage is among the highest we’ve seen on a consumer device, although there isn’t an option to expand with external memory, which may put off some people. That being said, 512GB is a lot of space, so you’d need to work hard to fill this capacity.

Camera and Features

The camera has become one of the key areas of contention when it comes to top-tier smartphones. With Samsung’s 108MP, 100x zoom monster being the benchmark, how does the Oppo measure up?

Actually, surprisingly well. The 48MP primary shooter does a good job of day to day shots, showing very strong colours and good contrasts between dark and light areas. The 13MP telephoto lens allows you to zoom in close with 10x hybrid zoom and 60x digital zoom, although at 60x the detail will be long gone from your images. Finally, the 48MP ultra-wide lens gives a 120-degree field of view and is perfect for landscape shots taken on your travels.

The selfie shooter comes in at 32MP and offers what Oppo is calling ‘Ultra Night Mode’. This new feature is designed to create great-looking selfies even in darker environments. In principle, this sounds great and could be a strong selling point if they have managed to carry it off effectively.

Features

Sadly, the device does not come with a headphone jack, meaning you’ll either need an adapter or wireless headphones to listen to music and videos. The fingerprint sensor is under the display and reacts very quickly indeed. The optical face unlock is also very snappy, with neither of these features leaving anything to be desired.

The battery has a 4260 mAh capacity and supports the 65W fast charging feature, using the SuperVOOC charger, getting to 100% in just 38 minutes. The device does not support wireless charging which may be something of a negative for people that like to use wireless cradles and docks for their devices.

Conclusion

Overall, this is a very nice, very snappy phone. It sits well at the price point and competes with even the best flagship phones that can be bought today. If you’re looking for something that can handle everything you throw at it and want to try something a little new and different, then Oppo presents itself as a very valid choice.

One thing that we are particularly wary of with this device is the battery size and how quickly this will diminish when using the highest screen resolution with 120hz. This might mean at least once a day charges for those that have a high amount of screen time, but you can always choose to scale the resolution back if you find it consumes the battery too quickly.
