How to Reboot your iPhone

Also referred to as a hard reset, rebooting is a simple solution to a lot of issues that won’t cost you your data. It’s a great option if your iPhone starts to act a bit odd and you're unable to turn it off normally by holding down the power button.

Depending on the device you own, you will need to press and hold various buttons.

To reboot an iPhone 8 or earlier model, including an iPod Touch:

  1. Press and hold the lock/unlock button on your device.
  2. Ignore the power off slider and wait for the screen to go black.
  3. Release the buttons once the Apple logo appears, and the phone will begin the start-up sequence.

To reboot a later iPhone model with no home button you will need to:

  1. Press and hold the side button on the right of the device.
  2. While still holding the side button, press and hold either of the volume buttons on the left of the device.
  3. The power off slider should appear on the screen. Ignore this and continue to hold down the buttons.
  4. The screen will go black. You can release the buttons once the Apple logo appears on the screen device.
  5. The device should then begin its start-up sequence.

How to Reset Your iPhone With Recovery Mode

If your iPhone is being unresponsive and there’s nothing you can do, another option is to use recovery mode.

Recovery mode is a fail-safe troubleshooting mode where iTunes on your desktop can attempt to repair the iPhone’s operating system.

It is a useful tool that you can use when the following happens:

  • Your computer doesn’t recognise your device or says it’s in recovery mode.
  • Your screen is stuck on the Apple logo for several minutes without any progress.
  • You see the recovery mode screen.

Recovery mode can save your iPhone and make it usable again, but be warned, this will delete everything from your device.

Setting Up iPhone Recovery Mode

Depending on your device, you will have to use different techniques to reach your recovery mode screen.

For iPhone 8 or more recent models:

  1. Quickly press and release the volume up button.
  2. Quickly press and release the volume down button.
  3. Hold down the phone’s side button until the Apple logo appears.

For iPhone 7 and older models:

  1. Press and hold both the side and top buttons along with the home button for ten seconds.
  2. Wait until the Apple logo appears before releasing the buttons.

Using Recovery Mode to Fix Your iPhone

When you have put your iPhone into recovery mode, you’ll need to follow these instructions to fix your phone:

  1. Make sure your iTunes is up to date. If you are using a Mac, ensure this is up to date, too.
  2. Before plugging in your device, make sure iTunes isn’t already open. If it is, close it and open it again.
  3. Plug-in the device and keep it connected. Wait until the recovery mode screen appears.
  4. Locate your device on iTunes on your computer. An option for restore or update should appear.
  5. Select update. This allows the computer to try and reinstall the software without deleting any existing data.
  6. Wait for the download to complete. If the download takes more than 15 minutes and the device exits the recovery screen, allow the download to finish and enter recovery mode on the device again.
  7. Once the download has complete and the update has finished, you can then set up your device.

How to Reset Your iPhone Using a DFU Restore

DFU stands for Device Firmware Update; this will reload the software and firmware of your device. DFU is an even deeper reset than Recovery Mode.

If you can, make sure you back up your device if you are going to use DFU, as you will lose your data.

iPhone 6 or Older DFU Restore

To launch DFU Mode for an iPhone 6 or older you will need to:

  1. Connect the device to your computer using a USB cable.
  2. Hold down both the home button and the lock button.
  3. After 8 seconds, release the lock button while continuing to hold down the home button. Note – if the Apple logo appears, the lock button has been held for too long.
  4. Nothing should be displayed on the device when it is in DFU mode. iTunes will alert you that your device was detected in recovery mode. Note - if your device tells you on the screen to connect to iTunes you will need to repeat the process.

To exit DFU Mode you will need to restart your device, to do this for an iPhone 6 or older device:

  1. Hold down the home button and the lock button until the device reboots.

iPhone 7 DFU Restore

To launch DFU Mode for an iPhone 7:

  1. Connect the device to a computer using a USK cable.
  2. Hold down both the lock button and the volume down button.
  3. After 8 seconds, release the side button while still holding the volume down button. Note - if the Apple logo appears, the side button has been held down for too long.
  4. Nothing should be displayed on the screen when it is in DFU mode. iTunes will alert you that your device has been detected in recovery mode. Note – if your device notifies you on its screen to connect the device to iTunes, you will need to repeat this process.

To exit DFU Mode, you will need to force restart your device. For iPhone 7:

  1. Hold down the side button and volume down button until the device reboots.

iPhone 8 or Later DFU Restore

To launch DFU Mode for an iPhone 8 or later model, you will need to:

  1. Connect the device to a computer using a USB cable.
  2. Quickly press the volume up button.
  3. Quickly press the volume down button.
  4. Hold down the lock button until the screen goes black, then hold down both side and volume down buttons.
  5. After 5 seconds, release the side button while continuing to hold the volume down button. Note – if the apple logo appears, the side button has been held for too long.
  6. Nothing should be displayed on your device when in DFU mode. iTunes should notify you that your device has been detected in recovery mode. Note – if your device appears with a message on the screen telling you to connect the device to iTunes, repeat the process.

To exit DFU Mode you will need to force restart your device. For an iPhone 8 or later, you will need to:

  1. Quickly press the volume up button.
  2. Quickly press the volume down button.
  3. Hold the side button until the device reboots.

The device should now be restored. The apps will take some time to download, so it’s best to give your device a few days to recalibrate. Because recalibration can be a draining process, it’s best to make sure your device is fully charged when doing this.

Once the device is fully recharged, leave it off charge for the battery to deplete before declaring the iPhone fixed. If your previous issue continues, then at least you have eliminated the problem as a software or firmware issue.
